Olde Ponale Rd

Looking for some scenery and some light exercise to loosen things up, I heard about the Olde Ponale Rd.  Built in the 1840s as an addition route to Riva del Garda and the Limone valley to the West of Lake Garda, it has some sections that date back to the Roman era.  Coming from America, it feels specially interesting to be traveling along paths used 2000 years ago.  The road is sort of an engineering feat as much of it is carved into the limestone cliff forming a shelf road.  Don't need to say much here.  The pictures will tell the story. Suffice it to say, there are many more routes off this road that one could roll around on a Mt or Cross bike for hours.

Good perspective of the shelf road near Riva del Garda.

One of many tunnels. Road is mix of dirt and rocky trail. One of the challenges is navigating walkers and riders of various abilities in two way traffic.

View across to Ponale w Rive del Garda in the background.

Heading inland. This section dated back to Roman times and shows typical road conditions.

Another steep hill this time w cobbles.   Section was difficult to ride up even in smallest 3rd ring. Think Penang Hill steep.

Swim in swim out? Sail in sail out? Hotel

Nice thing is, the ride ends next to a beach and Cafe. Time for linner.
